About Our Service
Real outdoor living for Santa Monica homes.
Santa Monica Decks designs and builds custom decks for Santa Monica-area homeowners who want to use their yard year-round. We start with a free on-site walk and scaled drawings, pull all required permits, and run the build with licensed crews. From a small balcony to a wrap-around hillside deck, we use coastal-grade fasteners and premium materials so the deck still looks great in twenty years.
How We Work
From the first site walk to final hand-over, one project manager runs the whole job.
1. Design and proposal
We walk the yard, take measurements, talk through how you’ll use the space, and draft a design. You see scaled drawings and a written proposal before we touch a board.
2. Permit and engineering
Santa Monica permits, engineered drawings for elevated decks, and HOA submission where needed. We run point on all of it.
3. Build and finish
Licensed crew handles framing, decking, railings, stairs, and any built-ins. Final walk-through and warranty documentation before we hand it over.

When You Need Decks
A custom deck is the right call when:
- You want to actually use your backyard — outdoor living that flows from inside the house.
- Stock plans don’t fit your lot — sloped lots, hillside grading, or odd lot lines need custom design.
- You’re entertaining or selling — a great deck pays back at resale and changes how you host.
- The old deck is unsafe or rotted — replace before someone falls. We can also reuse the footing footprint to save permit time.
- You want premium materials — Western Red Cedar, redwood, exotic hardwoods, capped composite, hidden fasteners, integrated lighting.
- You need an elevated or hillside deck — engineering, footings, and railings designed for the site.
We start every project with a free on-site walk and scaled drawings — no obligation to build. Call: 310-564-8939

What Affects the Cost of Decks
Custom deck pricing varies by size, height, material, and finishes. The number depends on:
- Square footage. Small balcony decks start small. Wrap-around or two-level decks add up fast.
- Height off the ground. Ground-level decks need fewer footings. Elevated decks need engineered framing and railings.
- Material. Pressure-treated pine is cheapest. Western Red Cedar and redwood are the classic natural-wood mid-tier, alongside composite (Trex, TimberTech). Premium hardwoods (Ipe, Mahogany) and Thermally Modified Ash/Pine/Oak are top-tier.
- Railing style. Wood railings are cheapest. Cable or glass railings cost more but open the view.
- Built-ins. Benches, planters, integrated lighting, gas line for a fire pit all add to the budget.
- Permits and engineering. Standard ground-level decks have a flat city permit. Elevated decks may need engineered drawings.
We'll quote your project after the site walk and design conversation — flat-rate, no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a custom deck take to build in Santa Monica?
Design to final hand-over typically runs 6–10 weeks. Design and permit takes 3–4 weeks. Build is 2–4 weeks on most projects.
Do you handle the Santa Monica permit?
Yes. We pull the building permit and any HOA submissions. Elevated decks may need engineered drawings, which we coordinate.
What materials do you offer?
Pressure-treated pine, Western Red Cedar, redwood, Thermally Modified Ash/Pine/Oak, premium hardwoods (Ipe, Mahogany), and composite (Trex, TimberTech, AZEK). Cedar and redwood are our most popular natural-wood decking — beautiful grain, naturally rot- and insect-resistant, and they handle the coastal climate well. We’ll spec the right material for your sun exposure and lifestyle.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — fully licensed California contractor, insured, and bonded. We can send our license number and certificate of insurance on request.
Do you do warranty work?
Yes. We warranty our framing for 10 years and finishes per manufacturer terms. We come back to address any issues during the warranty period at no charge.
